Looking better and feeling good are some of the temptations we get from tanning. But there’s a dark side to sun exposure that you should know about. The major problems from getting too much sun are cellular damage, early wrinkling, age spots, actinic keratoses, and skin cancers (including melanoma—the most serious type). Read below to find out the dark side of sun exposure.

The Effects of Too Much Sun Exposure

  1. Suntan: Tanned skin gives you that warm glow, makes you appear thinner, and can be considered a beautiful trend in society. But a tan is actually a sign that the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, is injured. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays speeds up the aging process, and increases risk for future skin diseases like cancer.
  2. First-Degree Sunburn: Sunburn as a first-degree burn is proof that the skin has been damaged. Side effects include redness, heat to touch, and mild pain. It appears a few hours after exposure and can take a few days or weeks to heal.
  3. Second-Degree Sunburn: Sunburn as a second degree burn results from extreme damage to the deeper skin layers and nerve endings. It is more painful and takes longer to heal than minor sunburn. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and blistering. However, blisters may be a good sign. Don’t break them as they serve as a moisturizer and protector, and if broken can cause infection.
  4. Wrinkles: One of the biggest things we obsess about results from getting too much sun! Once the tan fades away the wrinkles appear. Too much sun exposure gives you too many wrinkles too soon. More than 80% of skin aging is due to teenage tanning before age 18. Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet light damages fibers in the skin (elastin). When the fibers breakdown, the skin sags, stretches, and loses its elasticity.
  5. Uneven Skin Tone: Irregular coloring or pigmentation in your skin can result from too much sun. Certain areas are lighter, others darker. Small blood vessels in your skin can also become inflamed and give off a red appearance. All of these changes can become permanent.
  6. Freckles and age spots: These spots on the top layer of skin are usually on overexposed parts of the body. Although they are no sign of a serious health risk, some early stage cancers look similar to freckles.

Tips for Sun Exposure

• Avoid the sun from 10AM through 4PM, when its rays are the strongest.

• Always remember to use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when you’re outdoors! Don’t forget lips and ears.

• Cover up and wear protection including sunglasses, hats, sarongs, and other clothing.

• Cold compresses, aloe vera, or moisturizing creams can help reduce pain for sunburns.

• If a freckle or mole changes in size, shape, or color, or becomes painful, consult a physician.

Pure Edge Nutrition’s Polypodium Leucotomos

This USA made supplement is an extract that comes from a tropical fern plant originally grown in Central and South America. Native Americans have long used this plant to treat inflammatory and skin diseases. The major benefits are that it prevents the skin aging process, has anti-inflammatory properties, and boosts the immune system. Polypodium Leucotomos has also been found to stop cytokines, which if overproduced, can cause inflammation and tissue damage, and autoimmune diseases.

Interestingly enough, it is also called “sunscreen in pill form.” Studies suggest that it can reduce sunburn severity and decrease the risk of cancer from UV radiation. Other benefits include reducing side effects of PUVA, a treatment for psoriasis that requires psoralen (light sensitizing medication) with ultraviolet light A. The use of PUVA is limited due to the risks of skin damage and skin cancer.

Remember to think twice about basking in the sun. The physical evidence is proof, so be safe and cover up!
