It’s important to remember that there are lots of foods to be extra careful with. Kick off summer with a healthy diet that does not include these bad foods. Instead, get the best of the best. Consider these healthy alternatives to enhance your diet and health!

1.     Non Organic Eggs

Eggs are easily susceptible to Salmonella due to their thin shells. Likewise, the storage and treatment of hens that lay the eggs plays a big role, and affects the eggs they produce. Salmonella is a bacterium commonly found in eggs, and can easily infect humans if eggs are undercooked or raw. Recently the FDA has set stricter rules for hen houses and egg production. Cage-free, free-range, pasteurized, and organic eggs are the safest choices. Make sure to refrigerate eggs immediately, and cook thoroughly after careful inspection.

2.     Non Organic Potatoes

We don’t think about the need for organic potatoes as often as fruits and veggies, but organic potatoes are crucial for optimum health. Potatoes are sprayed with lots of pesticides, and since they’re grown in the ground, they absorb even more pesticides and fungicides. Studies show potatoes have a high concentration of everything bad. To make matters worse, a lot of our favorite side dishes are potato based, including: fries, chips, hash browns, and tater tots. Try to purchase unprocessed organic potatoes, which also contain less sodium.

3.     Non Organic Fish

Fish are the best source of omega-3 fatty acids and protein. But fish can be easily contaminated with methyl mercury (a strong neurotoxin) and PCBs (which cause cancer). A good rule of thumb is to choose fish with the lowest possibility for these contaminants. Generally small, low-fat fish that don’t live towards the bottom of the sea including herring, mackerel, wild Alaskan salmon, shrimp, tilapia, and black sea bass are the best choices. Opt for wild-caught instead of farmed seafood.

4.     Sweeteners & Salt

Everyone knows that there are health risks associated with eating too much sugar. But did you know artificial sweeteners are up to 200 times sweeter than regular table sugar? The use of sweeteners may lead to weight gain, increase your appetite for sweets, and possibly cause cancer and neurological problems. Opt for honey or stevia instead.

Table salt is usually mined from underground deposits, and heavily processed to eliminate minerals. Swap it for sea salt, which is less processed and contains healthy minerals. Always use salt in moderation – try to keep your sodium consumption to less than 2,300 milligrams a day.

5.     Non Organic Apples & Berries

In 2012, Apples were named as the produce with the most pesticides. Apples and berries get sprayed more often because they aren’t resistant to pests, and to increase the shelf life of fruits in high demand all season long. Apples and berries are known for their high antioxidant and fiber content, so they will keep you fuller longer. Make sure to get apples and berries that are certified organic or fresh from your local farmers market.

Stay away from these worst foods for a healthier and happier you. There are many types of options that can keep your diet fresh and fantastic, so mix things up this summer and steer clear of these unhealthy foods.
