The Worst Foods You Could Eat: Part 1

canned tomatoes

There are many foods in grocery stores that we buy without knowing how bad they really are for our health. We forget that these everyday foods are the culprits that are stopping us from our health and weight loss goals. Beware of the foods below – find out why you should never eat them again!

1.    Soda and Sweetened Drinks

Just because they’re everywhere, doesn’t mean they’re good! Soda, sports drinks, fruit drinks, and energy drinks have absolutely no nutrients, but lots of calories. They’ve taken over restaurants, supermarkets, and vending machines. They dehydrate the body, cause cancer, and destroy your teeth.

Instead, try plain water or coconut water. They are the best choices for hydration, with the least amount of calories. Another good choice is green or black tea, which contain antioxidants and natural herbs that have great nutritional power.

2.     Deli Meats

Put down the sandwich meats! Bologna, ham, roast beef, and other cold cuts are way over processed, and are packed with sodium and unhealthy preservatives. Studies have linked the preservatives in processed meats to colorectal and other cancers. The average slice of deli meat has about 400 milligrams of sodium. High sodium intake is also related to high blood pressure, which can cause heart disease and stroke.

Instead, try fresh meats. Cook your own, or look for organic brands with low sodium and no preservatives.

3.     Canned Tomatoes

Think about it – anything that is canned and can last for years isn’t good to consume. All canned tomatoes contain BPA, a very harmful chemical which can seep into the food over time. The way the food is stored can cause many potential health risks, such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and cancers, and should be avoided at all costs.

Instead, try fresh fruits and veggies, or food stored in glass jars. Stay away from canned foods altogether!

4.     Butter or Margarine

Butter and margarine, although served in small quantities, is filled with calories, trans fat, and saturated fat. One tablespoon contains 100 calories and 11 grams of fat. It’s easy to use more than you think you are, because it’s hard to spread on food or melt right away.

Instead, try canola oil or olive oil when cooking, because they have good fats (mono and polyunsaturated fat). Coconut oil is a healthier alternative than butter when baking. And if you must have butter on your toast, use whipped butter, because it cuts calories and fats by one third.

5.     Whole Milk or Non Organic Milk

Dairy products contain many chemicals and hormones through the pasteurization process. Although they contain good nutrients such as protein, vitamin D, B-12, and riboflavin, they come with the hefty price of fat and cholesterol. If you drink 1 glass of milk each day, it totals 1,904 calories per week!

Instead, try almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk, or organic milk. These contain less fat, and healthier ingredients. Utilize this tip with all dairy products, including cheese, yogurt, and even ice cream.

Avoid these worst foods and change your lifestyle for the better. Think outside of the box for a healthier inside and a happier outside. There are tons of healthy alternatives that are just as good (if not better) than their counterparts. Enjoy your healthy eating!
