Have you created a list of resolutions for 2013? Personally I agree with English author G.K. Chesterton who said, “The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.” And for many of us, even the resolutions we make in regards to our physical well-being, such as going to the gym or starting a new diet, are made in hopes of having a positive influence on our mental well-being as well.
Resolving to Stick with Your Year 2013 Resolutions
Think back to New Year’s, 2012. Did you stick with your resolutions? Did you even make resolutions? If you’ve ever not kept them, then you know that things are much easier said than done – especially when it comes to New Year’s resolutions! It seems so easy to say that you’re going to lose weight and that you’re going to stick with your new, stricter eating plan.
But carrying those New Year’s ambitions into the days beyond January 1st is hard! There’s always something to do, or someone who needs your attention, and the timing always seems just a wee bit of. The truth is that there regardless of all the infomercials promising otherwise, there are more factors that work against our attempt to keep New Year’s resolutions than there are to help us stick with them. It’s so easy for your old lifestyle to set back in.
Before you know it, the promise to take a walk every Sunday afternoon turns into a marathon of couch sitting on front of the television or gaming console. Cold weather is a convenient excuse to keep us from the gym. Not to mention all the overtime you have to work to pay down your holiday debt. When you consider all that stress giving our psyche a workout, then who has time to go to the gym? A snack will make you feel better, but there goes your diet!
Tips for Success when Sticking by Your Resolutions
It’s possible that your New Year’s resolutions are a bit of amusement to your friends and family. If you have trouble sticking with your lofty goals, that’s exactly why it’s important for you to actually make better effort in 2013! When you say you’re going to do something and then never do, you’re telling the world that you’re unreliable. And if you can’t rely on yourself to at least try to keep your resolutions, then how can others rely on you? Here are some tips to help you get started with carrying out your New Year’s resolution!
- Be realistic. – Work your way into a new, healthier lifestyle with baby steps. Don’t set weight loss goals over ten pounds for a certain amount of time. Any large amounts are daunting, and are easier to get discouraged. The same goes for visiting the gym. Start with 2 or 3 visits a week, and no more than 1 exercise class per week for the first six months.
- Pair up with a friend. – Having someone by your side that will encourage you and hold you accountable will make keeping those resolutions so much easier, especially if you are encouraging them and holding them accountable for their own efforts in return.
- Set short-term goals that lead to long-term results.-That ten pound at a time weight loss plan will really add up. If you lose ten pounds every two and a half months, then you could potentially be 60 pounds lighter when it comes time to celebrate 2014!
So if someone snickers when you bring up your New Year’s Resolution for 2013, then maybe it’s time to challenge them to join you for the extra support and accountability. In many ways, New Year’s Resolutions can involve a sort of lifestyle change, especially in those that involve weight loss, quitting smoking, or even cutting back on alcohol consumption. If you’re ready and willing to take the bit of change that is necessary, then grab a partner and go for it. You have nothing to lose except a few bad habits!
