Cancer Fighting Veggies

Cancer. Just the word evokes fear and sadness, sometimes anger, in the hearts and minds of those who have seen the damage, or those who fear the damage it can bring if it ever knocks on your own door.

It is the number two killer overall, so taking action now, before you ever fall victim, is a wise choice.

Keeping yourself in overall optimum health with regular exercise, staying at a healthy weight, and having a healthy diet are excellent ways to put up barriers to cancer.

Eating 2/3 of your diet in plant based foods, and trying to “eat a rainbow” each day is an excellent goal – in this case, the gold at the end of that rainbow is increased health and vitality and a stronger immune system. It is difficult to go wrong eating a large variety of veggies and fruits each day; they all contribute to overall health and indirectly to cancer prevention.

But some are more noted for having really strong direct cancer fighting abilities.

Some Outstanding Cancer Fighting Veggies:

  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Cabbage
  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • All Cruciferous Veggies (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts – if you look at the base of these, they all have a similar “cross” of stalks that identify them as being cruciferous)
  • Dark leafy greens like kale and spinach
  • Asparagus
  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers (Including hot peppers)

Other Super Foods for Cancer Prevention:

  • Soy
  • Ginger
  • Flax seed
  • Green and White tea
  • Citrus Fruits
  • Avocado (you might think it is a veggie but technically a fruit – yes, we could get into the tomato debate but it has been granted veggie status in most circles.)

Berries, beans, apples, cherries, winter squashes, watermelon, grapes and grape juice, and even red wine are all given the nod in cancer prevention.

Fighting Cancer:

If you are currently in the process of kicking cancer’s behind (good for you!) there are some juicing drinks that have a lot of reverence for supporting your efforts. By juicing, you get all of the nutrients but in an easy-to-absorb form so that your body is not put through the stress of trying to process raw fruits and veggies, which can be extra hard for some cancer patients.

  • Red Beets, including a bit of the green top
  • Carrots

Just those 2 ingredients are a super-power juice in the fight against cancer.  Add in a handful of dark greens or some broccoli and you up the power.

Veggies contain a lot of powerful things that go far beyond the familiar vitamin list. Phytonutrients are found in plant foods, and they are some of nature’s magic pills. While not always true (garlic and onions are great examples of the exception) look for really vibrant colors in fruits and veggies to tell you they are really high in phytonutrients. Remember that rainbow!

We can’t all be perfect – you’ll notice chocolate cake is NOT on the list for well-known cancer fighting foods!  But if you can work as many of these delicious and healthy veggies (and fruits) into your diet each day, you might just get away with the occasional slice of cake. Don’t worry. I won’t tell.
